The “Spring Break Discovery Hike” at Fort Des Moines Park is a practical field study for young naturalists. Led by Polk County Conservation, this guided exploration focuses on the early signs of spring—identifying budding trees and the return of local wildlife. It is an excellent way to transition from the classroom to the “great outdoors,” encouraging children to use their observational skills to document the changing ecosystem. It is a free, hands-on lesson in Iowa’s biodiversity and the importance of environmental stewardship.
