Adventureland Park: The Heartland’s Premier Destination for Thrills

Located in Altoona, just minutes from the Des Moines metro, Adventureland Park has served as a cornerstone of Midwestern entertainment since 1974. What began as a family-run vision has evolved into Iowa’s largest theme park, offering a nostalgic “Main Street” charm blended with world-class adrenaline. It is a site where the history of American amusement parks meets the cutting edge of modern coaster engineering.

Evolution of the Infinity Thrill

While Adventureland boasts over 100 rides and attractions, it is most notably the home of The Monster, a Gerstlauer Infinity Coaster that redefined the park’s skyline when it opened in 2016. This ride serves as a case study in modern thrill design, featuring a vertical lift hill that climbs 133 feet before plunging riders down a 101-degree beyond-vertical drop.

The innovation continues after the sun sets; The Monster features a bespoke LED lighting system with over 180 fixtures synchronized to the ride vehicles, a feature that has earned international design awards. Beyond the steel loops, the park maintains a deep respect for tradition with the Tornado, a classic wooden out-and-back coaster that has been a rite of passage for Iowans for decades. This balance of the old and the new allows visitors to experience the full spectrum of automotive and mechanical thrill history in a single afternoon.

  • Iconic Coasters: From the 4D free-spinning “Dragon Slayer” to the “Underground,” the world’s only indoor wooden coaster/dark ride hybrid.
  • Adventure Bay: An expansive water park included with admission, featuring Iowa’s largest wave pool and the “Caribbean Cruiser” lazy river.
  • Seasonal Festivities: The park transforms throughout the year, hosting the 21+ Oktoberfest in September and the haunting Phantom Fall Fest in October.

Plan a Visit

Adventureland operates on a seasonal schedule, typically opening in mid-May and running through the end of October. Because the park includes both a dry theme park and a water park, planning for a full day is recommended to experience everything the resort has to offer.
