ADVENTURES : Capitol to Terrace Hill

This tour explores the duality of Iowa’s leadership: the public-facing majesty of the State Capitol and the private, high-society life of the Governor’s Mansion. Along the route, we’ll dive into the scandals, fires, and “Gilded Age” drama that shaped the state.

🚗 Logistics & Parking

  • Total Distance: ~2.5 miles (Point-to-point drive or long walk).
  • Total Time: 3–4 hours.
  • Parking (Start): Lot 13 or 15 at the Iowa State Capitol Click to open side panel for more information (Free).
  • Parking (End): Terrace Hill Click to open side panel for more information dedicated lot at the corner of Grand Ave & Forest Dr (Free).
  • Price: Capitol is Free; Terrace Hill tours are $5 for adults (Cash/Check only).

Step 1: The Capitol Grounds (Monuments & Mischief)

  • Time: 45 mins | Distance: 0.3 miles (walking around the hill)
  • Check out: The Shattering Silence monument (South side). It commemorates the 1839 case of “Ralph,” a man who sued for his freedom in Iowa and won—long before the national Dred Scott case.
  • Historical Tale: Walk to the Cornerstone (Southwest corner). Look closely at the names. The original 1871 commissioners were fired after the first foundation stones cracked in the winter. Their names were literally chiseled off the cornerstone in a public act of governmental shaming.
  • The Scandal: The Great Fire of 1904. An electrician used a candle to find his way through the walls; he forgot to blow it out, and the House Chamber was nearly incinerated. The only casualty? An engineer who fell through the ceiling the next day while assessing the damage.

Step 2: The Trek to the Mansion (Grand Avenue)

  • Distance: 2.2 miles | Drive Time: 8 mins | Walking Time: 45 mins
  • The Route: Travel West on Grand Avenue. This was once “Millionaire’s Row,” where Iowa’s elite built sprawling estates to stay away from the smog of the downtown coal-burning factories.
  • Passing Point: Look for the Salisbury House on your left as you get closer—a 42-room Tudor mansion that cost a fortune to build during the 1920s.

Step 3: Terrace Hill (The Governor’s Palace)

  • Time: 1.5 Hours | Cost: $5 (Adults)
  • The Vibe: High Victorian “Second Empire” style. It’s the official residence of the Governor of Iowa and a National Historic Landmark.
  • Check out: The Grand Staircase. It features a massive stained-glass window that cost more than most houses did in 1869.
  • Historical Tale: The house was built by B.F. Allen, Iowa’s first millionaire. He spent a staggering $250,000 to build it (about $5 million today) just to go bankrupt a few years later. He sold the “Palace of the Prairie” to F.M. Hubbell for a fraction of the cost.
  • Modern Note: As this is a working residence, you must call (515-281-7205) at least 48 hours in advance to reserve a tour.

Step 4: Governor’s Terrace & Garden Stories

  • Time: 20 mins
  • Check out: Walk the formal gardens (included in tour, weather permitting).
  • The Scandal: The mansion has seen its share of modern political tension. In the 1970s, many Iowans protested the state spending money to renovate the mansion for Governor Robert Ray, calling it an “Imperial” move. Today, it remains a focal point for both state celebrations and political protests.

💡 Pro Guide Tips

  • The Gatekeeper: Entry to Terrace Hill is via a pedestrian gate on Forest Drive. You have to buzz an intercom to be let in by a State Trooper—it’s a bit intimidating, but totally normal!
  • Cash is King: Terrace Hill does not accept credit cards. Bring a five-dollar bill per person.
  • The D-Line: If you don’t want to move your car, the Free DART D-Line shuttle can take you from the Capitol to 17th & Grand, leaving you just a short 10-minute walk from the mansion.
