Summer Porch: Mason Jar Lights & Striped Rugs

Well, hello there!

As the humidity rises and the fireflies start to make their appearance, we transition our focus to the Summer Porch. In the Midwest, the porch is our evening headquarters—it’s where we catch the breeze after a long day and wave to the neighbors. For 2026, we’re moving toward a “High-Summer Heritage” look. Think of it as a blend of a classic lake house and a crisp, modern estate, focusing on classic patterns and ambient lighting that glows long after the sun goes down.

💡 Ambient Lighting: The Mason Jar Glow

Forget the harsh floodlights. We want our summer evenings to feel magical and soft.

  • Mason Jar Lanterns: There is nothing more quintessential to a Midwest summer than a Mason jar. For a modern twist, use blue-tinted vintage “Ball” jars. Fill them with battery-operated fairy lights or solar lids to create “firefly jars” that line your porch railings or steps.
  • Galvanized Sconces: If you’re looking to update your permanent fixtures, go for oversized gooseneck lamps in a galvanized or matte navy finish. It grounds the space with a bit of industrial farmhouse weight.

🏁 The Pattern Play: Striped Rugs & Classic Navy

While spring was all about florals, summer is the time for bold, clean lines.

  • The Striped Anchor: A large-scale navy and white (or charcoal and cream) striped outdoor rug is the perfect foundation. It feels nautical yet stays true to our practical roots.
  • The Performance Fabric: This is where we invest in high-quality outdoor pillows. Look for “ticking stripes” or “cabana stripes” in weather-resistant fabrics. They handle the mid-afternoon thunderstorms and the bright prairie sun without fading.
  • Wicker & Wood: Pair your stripes with natural textures. A set of resin wicker chairs or a sturdy teak bench provides the “warmth” that keeps the black-and-white palette from feeling too cold.

🥤 The “Porch Refresh” Station

One of my favorite ways to style a summer porch for guests is to set up a dedicated beverage nook.

  1. The Surface: Use an upcycled potting bench or a small wooden crate turned on its side.
  2. The Essentials: A large glass drink dispenser filled with lemon-mint water, a stack of striped paper straws, and a galvanized bucket filled with ice.
  3. The Decor: A simple vase of fresh-cut zinnias or sunflowers from the garden adds an instant pop of “Happy” to the corner.

🛠️ DIY “Floating” Mason Jar Planters

If you have a blank wall on your porch, this is a beautiful way to add vertical greenery.

  1. The Wood: Use a piece of weathered cedar or barn wood.
  2. The Hardware: Attach stainless steel hose clamps to the wood using wood screws.
  3. The Jars: Slip your Mason jars into the clamps and tighten them with a screwdriver.
  4. The Plants: Fill with drought-tolerant succulents or trailing herbs like thyme. It looks incredible and keeps your herbs right where you need them for summer grilling.
